Back to School

We started back to school 27 days ago in July.

Ruby finished up her kindergarten curriculum back in March. Instead of stopping, we started the first grade curriculum. We did the first ten weeks of the first grade curriculum and took a break in June and part of July.

We picked back up with a review of week 10 on July 18th. Clara started back in her preschool curriculum as well.

What do we do all day????

That’s usually the big question. The answer is not simple AND it’s as simple as saying, “whatever we want to do”.

FYI….we do have a good curriculum that I follow, I pull other from other supplemental materials, follow some research based math and writing units and do many other things. Just in case you think we do “nothing”.

School, for us, at this age level, usually takes us about an hour and half to do. The girls get up, eat, play, watch one tv show, do morning chores and then we start school. By the time we finish up school, it’s time for lunch, more play, naps and quiet times, more play, read aloud time, finding Matt at work or enjoying the evening. Sometime when Matt gets home, Ruby usually has to read or review sight words, read her assigned book with him.

If Matt comes by and says he’s going up the mountain, it makes for a great learning opportunity. We are able to drop what we are doing, pack some snack and tag along.

Sometimes we have get to have school outside, while having a picnic in a hay stack yard.

Most times we are at our dining room table.

(Clara’s first time writing her name independently with no verbal prompts.)

We get to do our school just about anywhere, doing anything we want and exploring.

In Ruby’s curriculum, we have two days of art instruction. It is by far her favorite two days. We’ve also added in one day of Spanish instruction. It’s a close second for her.

On Saturdays we rotate painting, photography, music and sculpting (playdough for Clara).

Most of our days are filled with learning, exploring and play.

It’s good to be back to school.
