Halloween 2017

Ruby wanted to be a wolf since early September. Clara wanted to be a fox. What did they end up being?

A wolf and a monarch butterfly.

Don’t look too closely at Clara’s painted face. She decided about 40 minutes before it was time to leave that she wanted her face painted. We did a rush job and she was pretty wiggly. Also, why the change to a monarch? We had this emerge yesterday.

As we were watching it dry yesterday, she declared that she MUST be a monarch for Halloween.

More on that later, maybe.

We went to Ten Sleep to Trunk or Treat, have hot chocolate and cookies. We made our way back to trick or treat in Hyattville.

Happy Halloween!

First Days and a Break

Clara. Age: 4 Grade: Kindergarten, Week 16*

Ruby. Age: 6 ½ Grade: 2nd Lesson 66*

The girls have been doing school for about 50 days now. We started back on July 17th. We like to start early so that we can take long breaks along the way. We had two months off of doing school work. We started back with Clara continuing kindergarten and Ruby continuing in her 2nd grade curriculum. If we stay on track, both girls will be finished with their grade level in December. Then we’ll evaluate if they need to go on to the next level or continue with grade level information, go back and review, etc. We still have four months to get to the end, so we’ll see when we get there.

One of the good perks of kids getting older; they are able to help and have more responsibility. Here, Ruby is helping me make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Matt to take to work.

I haven’t taken many pictures during our school work time so far this session. We usually try to power through it and enjoy the rest of the day. The girls got a break from school the week of Labor Day. We were all excited to have a week long break. They had fun activities of biking, hiking and doing all kinds of other fun activities in the mornings.

(Ruby took this picture of Clara on her balance bike.)

(Turkeys on a fence)

On this particular day we were trying to hike out to the alleged tipi rings that are on the ranch. I have been around them and through them (literally), but we’ve never hiked out to them on foot to explore them more.

From Wikipedia:

Tipi rings are circular patterns of stones left from an encampment of Post-Archaic, protohistoric and historic Native Americans.[1] They are found primarily throughout the Plains of the United States and Canada, and also in the foothills and parks of the Rocky Mountains.

Clusters of stones circles are often found in favorable camp-sites, near water, fuel and good hunting grounds. In many cases the clusters are organized in patterns, such as rows, circles or v-shapes. The stones were used to hold down the tipis to keep the lodge warm and dry. In some cases elaborate walls or defensive structures were built.

This particular area of the ranch is right next to the Paintrock Creek. Also, it is right near where the elk come and go during the fall. It is also pretty level ground compared to the sloping terrain all around. Allegedly, this is one set of many rings documented on the ranch. We did not have time to make the other ½ mile walk from this spot to the other areas.

Also, this area is right next to an old sheep catch area/hay stack area from when the Hyatts ran sheep across the creek. I’m not certain on what the old catch area is. There are a row of rocks nicely stacked in front of the area. The Hyatts would hire Navajo from down south to work the sheep season. The use of sheep wagons was mainly practiced (as it is still today). Before the Hyatts had this area, the Lumans ran cows and sheep there.

I do know from others that there have been many, many arrow heads found in proximity of the rings.

Can you see the ring?

This next one is a little harder, but very clear to see in person. This ring is about five feet away from the ring in the picture above.

You can also see the road and animal trail through it.

Could they be real? Could they be something that the Hyatt Navajo Shepherds arranged themselves back in the mid 50’s?

I’m not sure. It’s fun to speculate and talk with locals about, though.

Also, little girls are fascinated by them.

It was a nice little break to get ready for fall.

What You Lookin’ At?

Not to bore you with my 100’s of pictures of the same set of turkeys, but they are here. The girls and I watch them all day long. This is the time of year that they come and hang out in our area of the ranch. We watch them every evening as they hunt bugs, fight over apples dropped from the trees, as they get ready to roost, listen to them “talk” to their babies, etc. They have been good entertainment. Those babies are SO much bigger now.

The elk have also been coming down. The bigger bull (he’s a 6×6) in the picture has just started bugling in the evenings. What started as a little group of 25 or so, has increased to about 100. In the next month the herd will be in the 300’s.

That deer. He’s just goofy. In fact, we girls call him “goofy”. The tines are growing out and pushing his ears down. He’s just strange. He comes down to eat in the pasture in front of the house every evening. This picture was when he was still in velvet. He still looks just as goofy.

The last picture is horrible. I just took it tonight. There wasn’t enough light and I wasn’t patient enough to get good settings. It’s a horrible, blurry picture of a hummingbird hawk moth. We first saw one when the lilacs were blooming in May. We now have two that visit my flowers in the evenings. They are used to us and settle back in to eating when we come around them. They have also been a great entertainment in the evenings.

Those are some main things that we’ve been looking at.

Summer Loving 2017

Summer lovin’, havin’ a blast. Summer lovin’ happened so fast….

We could just add in the month of August in all those memes as well.

We girls took about six weeks off of school work. We packed a good bit of nothingness into those days and weeks. J Matt is in his busy time of the year where he’s working about 20 hours a day during the cuttings and trying to catch up on things in the two weeks between cuttings.

(grass hay from the 140, that was custom baled)

Matt is starting into his third cutting this week. The next 25 days for him will be a blur. We girls will just keep plugging away and see him in the fields when we can.

But going back a little, we have had some fun.

Ruby has finally grown into her John Deere bike we got in Kansas about 4 years ago. Ruby has grown almost two inches from the end of May to the end of August.

Clara has gotten really confident on her balance bike and can zip around just about anywhere.

They ride bikes just about every evening. We take the bikes to different parts on the ranch or to their friend’s houses and they have a great time.

Clara was brave enough to get her face painted at the Fourth parade this year. Ruby was a wolf.

Matt got to join us for a little bit for the fourth. He rides his motorcycle just about every year to meet us. The girls were brave enough to both ride with him on the ranch’s driveway when we got back.

Ruby is VERY confident on the back of a bike. Clara is learning. Don’t worry. They went about 5 miles per hour on the ranch lane.

Ruby was ready to ride to the firework show in our little town that evening.

Everyone just camps out on the road. Two local ranches put on their own shows. A man in town, on the other side of the truck in the picture above, also does a big show. It’s a great time.

Moving on…

A watermelon from Georgia made its way all the way to Wyoming. It was probably in the top five watermelons I’ve ever had.

Lots of chair sleeping happens in the summer. Both of them can be found curled up in the chair in the evenings.

We’ve gone on a full moon hike. We hiked around and watched the full moon come up over the Big Horns.

We had a couple of visitors that did all kinds of fun things. Sleepovers, flying kites, hikes, fishing, playing, making, and all kinds of other fun was on the agenda.

Matt got to take us on a drive on the northern most part of the Big Horns.

But, schoolwork quickly came back around. We are still enjoying the longer days but we now have a morning of schoolwork before we enjoy the rest of the day.

Summer lovin’, happened so fast……

Total Eclipse 2017

Well, we didn’t have a TOTAL eclipse. It was more like 98% totality.

Majority of our homeschool day was focused on the eclipse. The girls were super excited. Ruby was more excited to see if it got dark. It didn’t. It was more like a cloudy day.

We had great glasses, made some shades around them and also made pin hole viewers.

Matt got to come by the house when the eclipse was close to the 98%.

The girls have jackets on because the temperature dropped a good 6 to 8 degrees outside. We also had a little wind. Also our time of day was about 11 in the morning. It’s still cool for us at that time of day.

We did not stay outside the whole time. We watched a broadcast on TV and also watched the live NASA stream online. The girls had a great time and it was a great learning experience.

T Ball 2017

Well, I thought this post was going to be just words. I’ve been having some difficulty with my camera talking to the computer and transferring pictures. BUT for some reason it worked today when I tried. Sooooo….here is some pictures of our T Ball season.

Padres- Coach Scott, Back Row: L-R: Jordyn, Levi, Kamron, Patrick. Front Row: L-R: Ruby, Clara, Liam, Camden (Missing: Fowler, Aurelia, Tennessee)

This was Ruby’s second year in the T Ball division and Clara’s first. Ruby really enjoyed playing this year. Clara was only interested in playing in the game and getting her snacks at the end. J We had one practice before the season started and five games during the month of June.

Matt and I were team helpers. Matt helped in the in-field and as base coach. I ran the dug out.

Clara did well most games. We played on a full size baseball field. The first few games she nearly got out each time she was up to bat. She could hit the ball, she just had a hard time getting to first base before the ball did. She just had small legs. She was one of the youngest kids on the team. The last game, played on a smaller little league field, Clara finally made it to all the bases each time she batted.

Yep. She bats left handed. She writes/colors with her right hand. She also shoots a gun left handed.

Matt made it to every game. He organized his town drop offs/pickups for the ranch on game days. He was able to come to the game, help, pick up his town stuff and make it back to work.

Ruby had a GREAT season. She greatly matured from last season to this summer in her fielding of the ball. This year she would actually move to the ball, move her body in front of the ball to field it and could catch the ball. She and another boy were great team mates and could do some fast plays. At one game, she and the boy got everyone out the whole game. Ruby was at pitcher and the boy was at first. Thee ball never made it past Ruby. Also, the team this year was GREAT at staying in their position but also fielding the ball. We never had all 9-11 players going to the ball.

Ruby never got out this season.

If she felt like the ball was almost close to getting her out, she would come home and run laps or “sprints” around the house to help her get faster. It was her own idea to “train” in running to get faster.

She is trying to decide if she wants to play coach pitch ball next season.

She’s got a little while to figure that out. J

Ice Cream Social Gymnastics Spring 2017

In May, the girls had an Ice Cream Exhibition. Basically, they sold tickets for people to eat ice cream and watch them do a small, non-scored gymnastics meet. The exhibition was in a gym that we normally do not practice in. The girls were spilt up into four mixed aged groups. Each group had preschool, beginner I, beginner II, pre-team, and a team girl. The rotations were: floor, tumbling, vault, and beam. Ruby is in Beginner I and Clara is in the Preschool class. Both classes are back to back on Wednesday evenings.

(Ruby going into a cartwheel)

(Rubying going into a hand stand. She can almost do one. It’s one of her goals.)

(Ruby on vault. Tuck Jump.)

Matt was able to attend the exhibition and brought the girls flowers.

They are doing really well in gymnastics. The regular season is over and we are in summer sessions. Clara has really worked on staying in line, waiting her turn, and following directions. She is also working hard on doing a bridge. Ruby really enjoys un-even bars (not at the exhibition), climbing the rope and working on hand stands. We have been super happy about their gymnastics program. We will get a break in July and will start back in early August.

Four is the Word

She’s four.

She’s fun.

She has her own style.

She can make a “baby” out of just about anything…sticks, rocks, dinosaurs, etc.

She’s still the one that gets in the most trouble.

She is VERY independent and LOVES to do things on her own.

She has a very select few that she opens up around.

She has many dreams and talks non-stop to her people.

She’s FOUR!!!

Lilac Days

The whole month of May we enjoyed these beautiful lilacs. They bloom every year, but this year I truly enjoyed them more than I ever have. The small towns in the Big Horn Basin all have these lilac bushes. Rarely do you see one that is white. All of the bushes on the ranch are a soft purple/violet color.

There is a row behind the house we live in, one bush near our gas stand and another bush at the “brand” house (one of the original ranch houses from long ago).

They are tall bushes and dense. The robins and grackles love making their nest in them.

We also have a baby bunny that comes out in the evenings.

As the month ends, the blooms have all but gone away. These lilacs days were special.
